Instructions

For detailed guidance on proper setup, placement, and use of the Flamingo Funnel™ hands-free smoke capture device, please review the official Instructions for Use (IFU). This document includes step-by-step directions, warnings, and important safety information to ensure effective and compliant operation in the surgical environment. Below, you can also explore visual step-by-step guidance for general use, along with specific placement instructions tailored to common procedures.

General Instructions for Use

Step #1

Before placement of product, prep skin and apply any clear plastic adhesive drape that may be used.

Step #2

Remove release paper on plenum to expose adhesive layer.

Step #3

Place plenum within .5” – 1.5” of intended line of incision, on side that allows tubing to remain straight when connected to the smoke evacuator.

Step #4

Remove both tapes from tubing and hand it off operating table.

Step #5

Place outer surgical drape over plenum. Avoid covering open cell foam.

Step #6

Attach tubing to ULPA filter of evacuator. Turn machine on to 100% continuous power and proceed with surgery.

Positioning for specific procedures

Abdominoplasty or C-Section

Place the Flamingo Funnel inferior to the curvilinear incision. Switch to the smaller size to capture smoke as the dissection moves cephalad.

If used for a C-Section, turn off the suction before the uterus is incised to prevent amniotic fluid from being sucked into the ULPA filter. Rely on Yankauer suction at this time. Restart suction when the uterus is being closed.

Anterior Hip Incision

Place the plenum medial to and within 1”-1 1/2” of the incision.

Anterior Shoulder Incision

Place the plenum lateral to and within 1”-1 1/2” of the incision.

Coronary Artery Bypass with IMA Dissection or Open Valve Replacement

Place the plenum within 1”-1 ½” of the incision.

Laparotomy

Place the plenum parallel to and within 1”-1 1/2” of the incision.

Lateral Hip Incision

Place plenum parallel to and on the superior edge of the incision with a lateral approach.

Local Excision with Axillary Lymph Node Sampling

Place the plenum superior to and within 1” of both planned incisions.

Nipple Sparing Mastectomy

Place the Flamingo just inferior to and within 1” of the inframammary fold incision.

Perianal

Place the plenum superior or lateral to and within 1” of the anal orifice.

Perineal

Place the plenum either superior or lateral to and within 1”-1 1/2” of the vaginal orifice with the open cell foam facing the opening. Note: The high smoke capture efficiency of the medium sized Flamingo, coupled with full power from the smoke evacuator is especially suited for fulguration of condyloma viral lesions.

Reduction Mammoplasty

Place the plenum inferior to and within 1” of the inframammary fold. Switch to the smaller size as the dissection proceeds cephalad.

Standard Mastectomy

Place the plenum medial to the incision to start. Switch to the medium sized Flamingo as the dissection proceeds medial to lateral and into the axilla.

Spine

Place the plenum within 1”-1 ½” of the incision.

Thoracotomy / Thoraco-Abdominal

Place the plenum parallel to and within 1”-1 1/2” from the incision.
